Background of the Study
Job security refers to the likelihood of an individual maintaining employment over time, which has been shown to significantly influence employee behavior and organizational outcomes. In the banking industry, job security is a critical factor affecting employee loyalty, performance, and retention. Zenith Bank Plc, one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions, operates a network of branches across various regions, including Borno State, where the socio-economic environment is unique due to security challenges and regional instability (Okafor & Eze, 2024). The nature of job security in such volatile areas can have a significant impact on employee attitudes and behavior.
In Borno State, where economic and security conditions have fluctuated due to insurgency and other factors, job security becomes a vital concern for employees. In such environments, employees often seek stability and are likely to prioritize job security when considering organizational loyalty. However, despite the challenges posed by the local environment, Zenith Bank’s ability to offer job security through various strategies such as employee benefits, career development, and organizational support plays an important role in employee loyalty (Uche & Nwachukwu, 2024). This study will explore the relationship between job security and employee loyalty at Zenith Bank in Borno State, shedding light on the dynamics that govern employee retention in such regions.
While previous studies have shown a strong connection between job security and employee loyalty, less research has been conducted in conflict-prone areas of Nigeria, where regional instability may impact employee perceptions of security. This research aims to fill this gap by examining how Zenith Bank’s practices in Borno State influence employee loyalty and satisfaction.
Statement of the Problem
In regions like Borno State, where job security is often threatened by local instability, organizations like Zenith Bank face significant challenges in maintaining employee loyalty. While job security has been linked to increased employee retention, motivation, and job satisfaction, the dynamics in Borno State may present a unique challenge. Factors such as local economic conditions, regional security risks, and the availability of alternative employment opportunities in the region may influence the extent to which job security impacts employee loyalty (Ali & Ojo, 2024). There is a gap in understanding how job security is perceived by employees in such environments and the extent to which it contributes to their loyalty to Zenith Bank.
